Lore Degenstein Gallery Exhibition

This past week I received notice that my painting, “Avian Communication in the Apocalyptic Mind” has been juried into the Lore Degenstein Gallery Sixth Annual Figurative Drawing and Painting Exhibition. Entries were selected for exhibit by judge Pamela Wilson, who will present awards at the opening reception and gallery talk on October 18.

Acrylic Artist Magazine Article

Several weeks ago I was interviewed by Anne Hevener of Acrylic Artist Magazine for a feature about figurative artists. The article titled, "Figuratively Speaking" is in the Fall 2014 edition, out now.

Enlightenment 12x9” Mixed media/composition gold leaf on board

“Enlightenment” was created primarily with acrylics along with a carefully placed area of composition gold leaf. I’ve used metal leaf in paintings before, but not usually in the manner I’ve done here. In previous paintings the leaf was sort of a separate element, for example as in the halo surrounding the figure in “The Sunday Morning Penitent.” In this piece I’ve painted both over and under the leaf and fractured the edges.
This was a difficult piece to photograph with its tinted metal leaf surface and contrasting colors. The leaf has a beautiful shimmering quality that the camera doesn’t easily capture. I shot a detail picture of the area that I applied the leaf to, using a raking light from above.
