Biography

John Walker’s work centers around a core of imagined narratives, as with his recent series of faux antiquities from an invented culture. Born in Aurora IL, he attended the College of DuPage and the American Academy of Art in Chicago before beginning a long career as an airbrush artist and illustrator. Much of his work is executed in a realistic manner that often includes elements of graphic design, stylization, and three dimensional objects. He has has won numerous awards including Best in Show at the Richeson 75 International Portrait and Figure Competition and the National Society of Painters in Casein and Acrylic Award at the 59th Annual NSPC&A Exhibit. His work has appeared in the “AcrylicWorks Best of Acrylic Painting” annuals, Spectrum art annual and Acrylic Artist magazine. His studio is located in a suburb west of Chicago, IL.

Artist’s Statement

My work might best be placed within the broad spectrum of pop surrealism or new contemporary with many pieces exhibiting a streak of dark humor. I’m essentially working within a couple of different series. The first revolves around the concept that we live in a multiverse and that the reality we experience is only one of many possible realities. This is the basis for my Dankquart Collection series, rediscovered antiquities from a lost civilization, existing in another part of the multiverse, one very much like ours, but slightly skewed. These are often mixed media pieces; reliquaries, shrines, or portraits, usually mounted in embellished frames. I’m always experimenting with ways to to push the idea in different directions and plan to have a new collection of work soon.

The second series is primarily made up of drawings. These pieces are derived from similar ideas of unseen worlds but are sometimes more conceptual in nature. Included are depictions of masked characters, mainly portraits, composed of collections of odd but naturalistic looking objects, and groups of seemingly common fruit or vegetables hiding strange creatures within.
